Claire Choi is an artist-researcher at Cornell University focused on the optical properties of materials. Her practice spans computational research on quantum dot self-assembly, space art, and art theory, where she presents a theoretical framework of "coupling" between scales. Her research includes a sole-authored study on the fractionation of polydisperse particles in a receding floating film (in review at the Journal of Fluid Mechanics) and a sole-authored Leonardo Work Bench article, "Greetings from CO2, from Outer Orbit" (in review); links to both are in the research section of her portfolio. She is currently developing a multi-agent reinforcement learning study of social-norm extinction, with a replication of Köster et al. (2022) complete. The project was developed in collaboration with an academic research laboratory and informed by consultations with multiple scientific experts. It incorporates specialized materials and methods from fields such as climate data analysis, auroral physics, and space physics. The Xu Bing Space Art Residency Program often receives submissions from artists who work across disciplines and engage with technology. In contrast, proposals from scientists approaching art from a research perspective are rare. For this reason, Claire Choi’s work reflects a distinct way of understanding and practicing art shaped by scientific inquiry. It brings a more diverse perspective to the field of art and technology."
